I finally had the chance to pull out the old car and start the repairs for the upcoming Altamont Big Dog Open in early April. 1st order of business is to remove the mangled bumper & pull out the fenders from the damage last October. I also worked on a tranny leak and indentified a few other problems.
Here is the beginning... Fortunately I have a telephone pole next to my house.
Here is the after shot... Old car next to the new build, my neighbors love me...
Front hoop completed
Interior of front hoop
Side view of bumper and bumper straps
Bumper installed with required chains to keep bumper from falling on the track

No time like the present to start a new car build. I pulled the early 80's Monte Carlo out of storage that I purchased earlier in the year from a fellow enduro driver, Mark Heer in the #77 Monte Carlo

First step was to cut off the roof and remove the roll bar that was in the car. The roll bar wasnt well made and I prefer to install a roll bar that I had built my self and ran in my mid 70's Malibu a few years ago.

John and Nels helped me out quite a bit making this a productive day until I ran out of O2 for the cutting torch.
Kyle was also there to support the efforts.

Soon I will weld in the roll bar, weld the doors back on and start with numerous other details.
Stay tuned as it is my goal to show the work that it takes to build an enduro car.
Update 11/12/07
The presidents day weekend has given me the opportunity to work on the car 3 days in a row. I didnt get everything done I wanted but I did make pretty good progress. I feel like I have done all of this a hundred times before but each time I am reminded how much work it is and the time that it takes.

My roll bar dosent fit tight into the door skins so I like to add bars to keep the door skins from caving in, it also gives me double protection from getting hit by a car. I added a thin plate on the drivers door as it is required in the pure stock class. I figured it is just one extra level of protection. I also will run this car with the pure stocks at a few tracks as a test and tune for the enduro races.

Some people like to mount their gas tank in the trunk area. I like to remove the floor pan. This allows me to build a little cage for my fuel cell and lower it a bit below the frame to get a better center of gravity.
This also gives me acces to the frame so I can mount my bars from the cage to the frame and then a bar from the frame to the back of the car to protect the fuel cell from a rear end impact. I will then use light guage sheet metal to close everything backup after the fuel cell is complete keeping me within the enduro rules.
Update 12/30/07
I got the chance to work on the car for a few more days. I have completed some roll bar miscellaneous items, welded the doors and roof back on & installed the fuel cell.
I also started to disassemble an old motor so I can get it cleaned up and will reassemble it soon, the crankshaft has a little surface rust and will need some polishing. Eventually it will be attached to this recently purchased transmission.\
Update on motor 1/26/08, rotating assembly is together.
Checking the bearing clearance assembled short block
Update 1/13/08
Couple of more upgrades.

I had to cut out the rotted out rusty radiator support. I then finished front radiator area with some light gauge sheet metal and wire mesh to keep debris out of radiator.
Update 1/23/08
I trimmed the fenders 3" per the rules and added a fuel cell protection bar.
Next step is to disasemble the front suspension and sand blast the surface rust, then reassemble with new ball joints, bushings shocks and springs. Coming right along!
Update 2/20/08
I sandblasted control arms, added ball joints, bushings etc. I also purchased new rotors and calipers since the old ones were very rusty. The car must of been out in a field for years?
Just about completed the motor and cleaned up and painted the motor bay and installed new motor mounts and master cylinder,
Update 3/9/08
Lil Kyle and I installed the motor & tranny
Now I have to wire everything up, add exaust and a ton of other work including paint and decals. I am going to park this for a while while I start porogress on my current car and try to get it ready for Altamont for 4/5,6.
